Line-5 of Mumbai Metro
Line 5 or Orange Line, commonly known as the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro, is a metro system in Mumbai that connects the suburbs of Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan. It is 24.9 km (15.5 mi) long and the first metro line in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to link these three cities. The line will consist of 17 stations, with two interchange stations located at Kapurbawdi in Thane and Kalyan.
Currently, commuters in Kalyan rely on the train system, while residents of Bhiwandi and other commuters use the roads. After completion, this project will address the transportation issue of growing population in the suburbs of Kalyan and Bhiwandi.
The Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 will pass through heavily populated areas, making it easily accessible to commuters. The Orange Line 5 project will be executed in two phases, with Phase 1 covering the Thane to Bhiwandi route and Phase 2 covering the remaining stretch to Kalyan.
In March 2022, the MMRDA announced a new plan to construct a 3 km underground track to prevent the demolition of thousands of structures. Phase 1 of the project will be completely elevated, while Phase 2 is still in the planning phase.
Once completed, the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 will be a much-needed transportation solution for the people of these suburbs, connecting them to the rest of Mumbai.
